Thursday morning we left the Vineyards campground in Grapevine, Texas. We went to bed early Wednesday night as we were pooped due to the late night prior to leaving The Woodlands and getting up early to shut the house down for 4 months.
The drive to Vernon was pleasant and we stayed at the Rocking A RV park next to Wally World. It is a former KOA campground. Did you know that KOA is short for an old indian phrase, "next to noisy railroad tracks"?
As it is back home, the temperature was excessive. It was so hot the Crows were gasping for air.
We made a leisurely departure this morning. Abby went for a walk and I did too. I walked over to Walmart to buy some items so I could repair the clothes bar in the bedroom closet. The bar had broken on ABBY's side (20 lbs in a 5 lbs sack come to mind?) of the closet. Temporary repairs were made until I can locate a hydraulic jack big enough to hold up her clothes while performing the permanent fix.
The drive today was very difficult as the West Texas winds were in full force coming in a left crosswind. I discovered the answer to the age old question---"why did the chicken cross the road?" It's because it was BLOWN across. The first 2 days of the trip we averaged 8.0 mpg. Today because of the winds it was 6.6 mpg.
Because of the winds we made multiple stops to check on the kayak on top of Abby's car. I could see it being buffeted in the rear end camera. After a while the camera overheated and I had to shut it off. As we came into Amarillo we stopped for fuel at the Flying J and discovered we had a flying k, as in kayak. The kayak rack had somehow come apart and the tie downs came loose and the kayak was about to depart. The Flying J had no adequate parking for a RV so we limped 16 miles down the road to the Oasis RV Resort where we are spending the night. Nice place but not a tree in sight. They probably all blew over.
Abby helped me repair the kayak rack and it is good for the road.
The resort has a happy hour from 5:30 until 7:00. All drinks are $2.28. They are very precise at this park. Guess where we are going at 5:30.
Tomorrow we leave for Raton, New Mexico. Hopefully it will be a little less eventful than today. We have reservations at the KOA campground for tomorrow night.
