Our week in Fairbanks

We arrived in Fairbanks Monday June 27th in the rain.  Tuesday it rained, Wednesday it rained some more. Thursday even more rain.  Friday it ********* rained.  Saturday even more ********* rain. Sunday, no it didn’t rain, it was a gully washer with flood alerts for the rivers and creeks all around Fairbanks.  The Chena River which flows by the park has risen 2-3 feet since we have been here.

Today, Monday the 4th of July it rained all morning but looks like it might stop in time for the parade of floats (I think I know how this term came about).  I hope the parade can float.  If not they are in trouble.

There is supposed to be an Air Force flyover at noon today but I think the Air Force no longer has float planes.

We have been getting out and around despite the inclement weather.  Walmart, Brewster’s (local pub) Sam’s, Brewstar’s, Walmart, Brewster’s, (see the trend?).  Actually Brewster’s has really good fresh halibut that we have been enjoying along with locally crafted beers.

Yesterday we drove 60 miles through some really pretty country to the Chena River Hot Springs Resort.  This resort is touted as being a great romantic getaway spot especially for honeymooners. After a few minutes of walking through the “resort” Abby told me if I had taken her to this place for our honeymoon the next thing that would have occurred was a divorce!  What a dive!  The only way they can justify calling this place a resort in my mind is because, #1. It is at the end of the road so “last resort” would be appropriate, or #2. places in Fairbanks are so skimpy they have to “resort” to staying at the hot springs.

We did see a lot of moose and calves and other animals along the highway happily chomping on grass (did I mention it was raining?).

As we were driving back to Fairbanks, we saw Ken and Debbie stopped at a rest stop so we pulled up alongside and honked.  They were surprised.  They were headed to of all places, the Chena River Hot Springs Resort.  Later that evening they pulled into the RV park for the night and came over and we exchanged “hot springs” stories while sharing a bottle of wine.  They never got out of their camper because you guessed it, IT WAS RAINING.

The wifi at this RV park has been terrible.

Maybe because of where we are staying?

Yesterday it was out all day.  Antenna was probably under water.

We saw a sign yesterday that we don’t see in Texas.

OMG! The sun just came out. See Ya!
